How we saved £80 on our trip to Copenhagen

Mention you’re heading to Copenhagen, and people’s first words will be, “Oh, it’s so expensive.” We encountered this before our 3-day break and decided that a budget would be the best way to keep our spending to a minimum.

While building our budget, we left room for a little extra spending plus took into account the higher exchange rate between pounds sterling and Danish krone. We secured some freebies, including: two interesting museums to visit (as we’re not the type to choose to pay for museums), and breakfast everyday included in our Airbnb stay. Freebies aside, we knew our main expense would be food, with 3 lunches, and 3 dinners to find.

After 3 days of traveling, I totaled our costs, and managed to compare spending areas. Our top tips?

  • Find accommodation that includes breakfast. Our Airbnb, for £30 a night, had a great breakfast at a nearby cafe each morning.
  • Complement your meals with snacks to stay full and allow you to eat less at your mealtimes.
  • Walk. Copenhagen is a very walkable city and a wander through the streets is a great way to see the hidden gems.
  • Visit some of Copenhagen’s great free museums instead of paying for entry.
  • Book your flights and lodging at least a month ahead of time if possible to save loads.
  • Finally, splurge on things you really want to do, like Tivoli (the oldest amusement park in Europe) or a nice meal out.

Below is an outline of our actual spending and the areas we managed to cut budget corners:

Though our trip was still over £200 per person, for Copenhagen (one of the top 10 most expensive cities in the world), we still managed to beat our budget. In fact, not including flights, we spent less than £52 per day… a good price for a backpacker in Scandinavia.
